Darwin Nunez, who arrived from Benfica last summer (up to $105 million) and returned nine PL goals in 29 appearances (19 starts), will be leaned upon even more heavily as Roberto Firmino (11 goals) departs this time around. Cody Gakpo took to life at Anfield like a duck to water after joining on Jan. 1 ($40 million, plus incentives) as he bagged 7 goals in 21 appearances (17 starts).

This summer, the focus will be on the midfield, where three rotational players are set to depart on free transfers, as Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho all embark upon the latter stages of their respective careers.

Updates
July 6 - Reds keeping tabs on unsettled Chelsea, England U-21 star

Levi Colwill’s strong loan season at Brighton and Hove Albion has been buttressed by his work with England’s U-21 national team this summer, and that’s put Chelsea in an uncertain position.

Colwill wants to play, you see, and Chelsea has a new boss in Mauricio Pochettino who has to decide his best XI. That means meeting a huge amount of players, many of them young due to Todd Boehly’s takeover last season, and sorting them into positions of priority.

And Colwill’s work at center back despite not turning 21 until February has captured the interest of many. Brighton’s made bids to bring him back, while football.london says Liverpool has repeatedly approached the Blues including once this week.

An exceptional passer who is very good in the air, Colwill nonetheless will have to win time over Benoit Badiashile. The 22-year-old showed well for Chelsea and is also a left-footed player.

Colwill wouldn’t be a shoo-in for starter’s minutes at Liverpool, where Virgil van Dijk has owned the left side and Ibrahima Konate wants to lay claim to the right (VVD has played on the right, too).

But he’d have every chance to earn said minutes, and it’s also interesting to consider what he might do on occasion at left back as Jurgen Klopp considers what’s best for his team with Trent Alexander-Arnold given more midfield-like responsibility on the right.

Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Nat Phillips, and Sepp van den Berg are also senior CBs in Liverpool’s squad.

July 4 - Liverpool ‘in contact’ with Romeo Lavia

The race to sign Romeo Lavia is heating up with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all pushing hard to sign the teenager.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have reached out to Lavia’s agents about signing him from Southampton. The 19-year-old is said to be valued at $63.5 million by Southampton, who signed him from Manchester City last summer.

The central midfielder had an amazing first season in the Premier League and is destined for big things. Per a clause in his contract, Lavia can be bought back by Man City for $53 million next summer so recently-relegated Southampton are probably going to sell him this summer to get more money.

Lavia was just named on the prestigious Golden Boy award shortlist and is already a full Belgium international. Given Liverpool’s need for plenty of reinforcements in midfield, Lavia fits the bill of a Jurgen Klopp player as he wins the ball back early and often and could become the long-term replacement for Fabinho in that role.

July 3 - Liverpool preparing offer for Southampton $50M man

Romeo Lavia was one of Southampton’s top men in a down campaign last season, but he may land Saints plenty of money to bounce back from relegation.

TalkSport says that Liverpool is now the frontrunner to sign the ex-Man City prospect, and that Lavia could cost over $63 million.

Liverpool is said to have moved ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in its pursuit of Lavia, while Man City is not said to be activating its buyback option on a player who won’t turn 20 until January.

Lavia scored once in 2,221 minutes for Saints in Premier League play while racking up tackles, interceptions, and blocks. (NM)

Liverpool unveils $76 million Szoboszlai

It’s official and it could be a Premier League top-four chase shaker.

Dominik Szoboszlai, an electric 22-year-old playmaker, is coming to join Alexis Mac Allister in Liverpool’s midfield rejuvenation.

The Reds struggled mightily in the middle of the park in their disappointing 2022-23 season and Szoboszlai is a big swing to fix that.

Szoboszlai plays hungry in all phases of the game and should thrive in Jurgen Klopp’s Gegenpress. Today’s a big win for Liverpool.

Here’s what he told Liverpool’s web site:

“[A] really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”

July 1 - Dominik Szoboszlai set for Liverpool medical

Liverpool have added one of the top young attacking midfield prospects in Europe with Dominik Szoboszlai, 22, set to join from RB Leipzig as he undergoes a medical with the Anfield club. Per a report from Fabrizio Romano, then multiple other outlets including the BBC , Liverpool have triggered the release clause in Szoboszlai’s contract. The Hungarian star burst onto the scene at RB Salzburg and has continued his progression at RB Leipzig over the last few seasons as he helped them win back-to-back German Cups. The transfer fee is $75 million and after the signing of Alexis Mac Allister for $45 million, Liverpool have done extremely well to sign two hugely talented and classy midfielders for $120 million so far this summer. This will give them a huge upgrade in midfield areas and help them to control games and gives them extra balance and poise.

June 30 - Liverpool trigger Dominik Szoboszlai release clause

Priority no. 1 (and 2, and maybe also 3) for Liverpool this summer is to upgrade and rebuild Jurgen Klopp’s midfield. Alexis Mac Allister was signed just last week, and now Dominik Szoboszlai appears to be headed to Anfield as well after the Reds reportedly tabled an offer of $76 million to RB Leipzig.

If Liverpool are to persist with a three-man midfield next season, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister will likely start in the attacking/pressing-two alongside one another, in front of Fabinho.

June 12 - Liverpool will be patient as they wait for James Ward-Prowse

According to a report from The Daily Mail , Liverpool want to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton this summer. Per the report, Liverpool are waiting to see what kind of bids develop for the Southampton and England midfielder. Per the report, Newcastle and West Ham are also chasing Ward-Prowse and Liverpool don’t want to pay over $60 million which is apparently what Southampton value him at. Ward-Prowse has been at Saints his entire career but after relegation, the 28-year-old suggested he would be moving on. The Saints skipper is an incredible set-piece specialist and a very solid midfielder who could slot in perfectly to this Liverpool side. He is basically the replacement for James Milner and JWP’s versatility and reliability make him a very savvy signing for Jurgen Klopp. If the price is right, Liverpool should do this deal. (JPW)

June 8 - CONFIRMED: Liverpool sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton

June 5 - Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool latest

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the long-mentioned Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool transfer is moving closer to reality.

Romano says that Mac Allister’s father/agent headed to England with the expectation of agreeing terms with the Reds, and that they’ve sorted a deal through the 2027-28 season.

That would then put the ball firmly in the court of Brighton to agree a fee with Liverpool for the World Cup-winning midfielder, with Romano saying it’ll be for a buyout clause “way less” than a reported $75 million. (NM)

June 3 - In-demand $40-million back name-checks Liverpool

Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven has had a dream to play at Anfield since attending a game there as a youngster.

An excellent ball progressor, Van de Ven is viewed as a $40 million target and reports have said Jurgen Klopp is an admirer.

So it’s a mutual appreciation society.

“I once went to the Liverpool stadium with my dad,” he told AZ WAZ . “That was over Christmas on Boxing Day. Liverpool vs Arsenal. That was madness. Then when ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ comes [on] – that’s a goose bump moment, that was very cool. It’s a dream to play there.”

The 6-foot-4 Van de ven turned 22 in April and has served as the captain of the Dutch U-21 national team. He moved from Volendam to Wolfsburg in the summer of 2021 and became a full-time starter in his second season, occasionally swinging to left back. (NM)
